Eastern Europe Studies Centre (EESC), in co-operation with the Swedish Institute (SI), Sweden’s embassy in Vilnius, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania kindly invites EHU students to the 2018 session of Vilnius Model United Nations (VMUN).

The VMUN 2018 edition will take place on UN Day October 24th; this day marks the 73rd anniversary of the United Nations. Model UN has deep-rooted traditions, being organised for the first time in 1949. From the very beginning, MUN has raised multiple future leaders of countries and international organisations. Among them, maybe the most famous example of all, former Secretary-General of the UN, Ban Ki Moon.

Important information:

The organisers will provide a lunch, coffee and snacks during the event. Also, organizers commit to reimburse travel expenses for those living further away from Vilnius. The official language of the event and VMUN simulation is English. Those wanting to represent a delegation at VMUN 2018 must apply by October 7th.

This year VMUN continues its aim to run a simulation, which is engaging, inspiring, thought provoking, and entertaining, trying once again to tackle an issue relevant to the current political stage. Participants will turn into country leaders for one day and are stimulated to use their diplomatic skills and knowledge towards formulating a solution for stabilising international conflict zones. VMUN ensures that every participant will leave the event with unforgettable memories of a day filled with stimulating discussions and valuable experience.

VMUN is proud to introduce this year’s topic “Solving Conflict in Eastern Ukraine: UN Peacekeeping Mission Deployment.” Ukraine’s longest and most deadly crisis since its post-Soviet independence began as a protest by its own people against the Ukrainian government in regard to abandoning plans for closer trade ties with the European Union. These protests have initiated the escalating tensions between the EU, the United States of America and the Russian Federation.

This year’s session will enact the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations of the United Nations. The committee was established in 1965 to closely monitor and uphold the principles of UN Peacekeeping. There are fourteen ongoing peacekeeping operations and fifty-seven that have been completed in the past. These operations vary greatly from one to another, with UNAMID helping to advance the political process in Darfur and UNMISS protecting civilians and monitoring human rights in South Sudan. In the end, they all work to promote international peace and relate closely to the scope of SPECPOL, the committee of the General Assembly to which the Special Committee reports on topics such as financing and operation progress.

Once a candidate has registered (applied) successfully they will receive confirmation by email. Selection will be executed according to the quality of the admitted application. Chosen delegates are expected to submit one position paper per delegation to the following email address: sarunas.legatas@eesc.lt by October 21th.

This year VMUN will pick 50 delegates totalling 25 delegations (2 delegates representing each state). We encourage students from all over Lithuania to participate and get a taste of what goes on at the United Nations. Do not hesitate, register now for Vilnius Model UN 2018!
