CALL FOR NOMINATIONS and PROPOSALS: Second Bard Network Debate Conference and Smolny Open Workshop

Workshop Dates: March 14-19, 2018


The Bard Debate Union and the Smolny Debate Society will host the Second Bard Network Debate Conference together with the Smolny Open Debate Tournament, March 14-19, in St. Petersburg, Russia. Through these two events, students, faculty, and staff from Bard network institutions will join together for four days of discussion, collaboration, and debate. Conference participants will engage one another in conversation about the state of their debate programs, their strategic plans for the future of their programs, public debates, outreach projects, and competition. Participants will attend two days of lectures and workshops and then participate in a two-day tournament; student participants will debate in the tournament and faculty/staff participants will judge at the tournament.

Student nominees should be sophomores or juniors who are currently members of their university debate teams and who intend to serve as debate team leaders in coming years. Students should have an interest in organizing public debates and debate outreach projects. Students must be in good academic/social standing.

Faculty/Staff nominees should be currently serving or interested in serving as debate team advisors. They should be interested in building and cultivating a public debate culture on their campus.


The conference will include workshops that offer skills-based sessions to encourage students to seek innovative and creative approaches for using debate.  Workshops may focus on:

  • Ensuring the longevity of campus debate societies
  • Staging and executing public debates 
  • Public Speaking
  • Research
  • Outreach Projects
  • Competitive Debating


The Smolny Debate Society, part of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences at St. Petersburg State University, will host the Smolny Open Debate Tournament on March 17-18, 2018. This is an international debate tournament in the British Parliamentary Debate Format. All debates will take place in English. Nominees should be familiar with competitive debating in general and the British Parliamentary Debate Format particularly.

Call for Nominations

We invite each Bard Network campus to nominate TWO students and ONE faculty/staff member to participate in this joint event. Campuses should also nominate TWO alternate students in the case that one of the selected students has a conflict arise and is not able to attend.

How to Apply

Each institution should complete the following two steps to apply:

1. One representative of the university debate program or civic engagement office should email conference organizer Ruth Zisman (zisman@bard.edu) with a list of names and email addresses of the 2 student nominees, 1 faculty/staff nominee, and 2 student alternates.

2. Each nominee and alternate should email conference organizer Ruth Zisman (zisman@bard.edu) with the following information:

  • Full Name as it appears on Passport, Passport Country, Passport Number, Date of Birth, Sex (Please also attach scan of passport photo/information page to the email)
  • Class Year, Major, and Academic/Social standing (students)
  • Degrees/Credentials and Position at the University (faculty/staff)
  • A 2-3 paragraph statement outlining his or her history with the debate program and plans for future involvement (including: tournaments/events, public debates, outreach projects, team leadership, etc.)


Nominations and Participant Information should be submitted by October 31, 2017
